Jacqueline PatricksAbout the Author:
As a teen, writing became my passion, and like most aspiring writers, my work was terrible, immature, cliched drivel. I enlisted in the Army, attended college for my creative writing degree, became a paramedic for twenty years (one of the few at the time with a degree), then switched careers into IT. Crazy, huh? Throughout my life, I’ve traveled far and pushed myself hard, striving to try almost anything at least once (except skydiving unless the plane is on fire).

I write like I live. Come and explore my imagination.

Genre: Fantasy
Age category: Young Adult
Release Date: 10 November 2014

All this while, Matilda’s shadow had been growing larger and larger. Suddenly, it lunged out of the ground and swallowed her, like a python does its unsuspecting prey.

Nine year old Matilda ends up with a century old book through a series of strange coincidences. And disappears. Her brother and cousins are forced to suspend their hostilities and pursue her to Sceadu, a land inside the human shadow. Once there, the reluctant visitors find themselves chased by the vicious Hefigans, creatures of Sceadu. However, everything changes with the revelation of an ancient prophecy that foretells the doom of the world they left behind.

With the stakes suddenly raised, the children must now navigate the dangerous terrain, overcome grave challenges, and unlock the secrets of the shadow. But can they do it in time to thwart the plans of the treacherous Hefigans? Or will they succumb to the guile of a ruthless enemy who is equally determined to destroy mankind?

Sceadu is a fast-paced adventure which blurs the boundary between the physical and the psychological, the real and the mythical.

You can find Sceadu on Goodreads.

Excerpt:
Matilda sat at her old wooden desk, staring into the thick yellowed pages of a book under a dull moth ridden beam cast by the night lamp. But every time she blinked, it seemed as if the words had played a round of musical chairs. And the moths, fluttering through the words at times and hovering over them at others, did not make things any easier.

Matilda was about to turn the page when there was a tug at her feet. It was a very gentle one, almost imperceptible. Surprised, she glanced down, but there was nothing. Perhaps it’s just my imagination, she thought. She was about to shake her thick dark brown curls out of her face when she felt it again.

Matilda pushed her head down and looked into the dark void with furrowed brow. Her skinny legs stared back. But before she could decide on whether she had actually felt anything, there was another tug, an unmistakable one this time. And another one. The truth suddenly dawned upon Matilda. It was her shadow, trying to drag her into itself.

Matilda jerked back the chair, kicking hard at her shadow. But it snapped back, pulling at her even more viciously. She stomped upon it repeatedly. But the dark grey shape began jabbing at her feet and ankles. Matilda pushed herself up and made a frantic attempt to run. But her legs refused to move, and she almost toppled forward.

All this while, Matilda’s shadow had been growing larger and larger. Suddenly, it lunged out of the ground and swallowed her, like a python does its unsuspecting prey.

Prashant PingeAbout the Author:
I grew up in the quiet and beautiful neighbourhood of Shivaji Park in Mumbai, India.

My schooling happened at the famed Bombay Scottish School where I was a rather conscientious student while my college years were spent at D. G. Ruparel College. I completed my bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Purdue University with a brilliant semester at the University of New South Wales. I followed it with a master of science in management from Lancaster University, a post graduate program in management from Indian School of Business, and a post MBA master in international management from Thunderbird School of Global Management. And yes, there is a simple explanation to all this. I love campus life.

I started my professional career as an engineer at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Once the monotony got to me, I returned back to join our family business in Mumbai, where I have been ever since. More recently, I have settled in the role of a consultant in my own marketing and branding firm, Media Panther.

My foray into the world of writing happened in 2003 after I had a dream that compelled me to stumble out of bed and put pen to paper. But that book is yet to be written. In the meantime, I happily string words together in my quest for Nirvana.

In my spare time, I enjoy collecting old coins, reading fiction, indulging my creativity (I have recently written and produced a short film, Freedom of Expression), travelling to exotic destinations, watching movies, and listening to music. I am also keenly interested in the subjects of psychology, mythology and ancient history.

I live with my wife and son in Mumbai.

The Little Guide to Getting Tied Up (Including Suspension) by Evie Vane

The Little Guide to Getting Tied Up (Including Suspensions)The Little Guide to Getting Tied Up by Evie Vane

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

~The Little Guide to Getting Tied Up (Including Suspensions) by Evie Vane was given to me as a read for review copy from the author through the BDSM group on GoodReads~

Personally I am new to the entire idea of BDSM and being tied up (or being a rope bottom). I wanted to give this book a read with the hopes of getting an idea of rope play. And I got just that. This book is both well written and incredibly informational.

It starts out with an Author’s Note and Disclaimer explaining a little about the author and what her body type is. A 44-year-old female coming in at five feet two inches and 115 pounds being moderately fit, expresses honestly that her experiences will not be the same as everyone else’s. This book is based on her experiences and those opinions/experiences of people who are well versed in the rope play community. The experience will be different and is possible for those who are of a different body type than her.

Now…on to the content. First off, I loved her mix of humor while still being serious and not sugar coating the intensity of this type of pleasure. For example, in the Introduction she explains when looking for rope bottoming on the internet:

“And if you search the web for “getting tied up,” well…be sure to duck before all the porn whacks you in the face.”

As well as another section saying what to include in your rope bottoming bag:

“Eye rewetting drops (maybe you cum so hard your eyeballs dry out, or you wear contact lenses).”

Hilarious! She manages to keep the serious tones and gravity of the results of irresponsibility in the mind of the reader while also keeping it light and entertaining.

She keeps reminding throughout the book that rope play is a dangerous activity and can lead to permanent injury or even death. She evens lists in Appendix B “Horror Stories” that have happened to other’s who did not take responsible action in rope play.

The author also uses personal stories of rope play situations that have happened to her to better explain what she means or is trying to convey in a particular chapter. Adding personal stories have greatly added to the content and helped reinforce and connect the reader with real-life situations rather than just saying matter-of-factly.

Overall, this book is one every BDSM interested person, from beginner to professional, should include in their library. Making the reader aware of the risks and respect rope play takes as well as revealing the fun and entertaining aspects of it are reasons I give this book 5 stars. I found very few mistakes (one of them being the overuse of the word “err”) and a good balance of outside resources mixed with her experiences. This is not a guide by a professional but rather a guide by an experienced woman looking to enlighten others.

I would greatly recommend this book to anyone interested in rope-play whether it be rope tops or rope bottoms. I am thankful to the author and the BDSM group on GoodReads for the opportunity to read and review this book.

In the Devil’s Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692

“Award-winning historian Mary Beth Norton reexamines the Salem witch trials in this startlingly original, meticulously researched, and utterly riveting study.

In 1692 the people of Massachusetts were living in fear, and not solely of satanic afflictions. Horrifyingly violent Indian attacks had all but emptied the northern frontier of settlers, and many traumatized refugees—including the main accusers of witches—had fled to communities like Salem. Meanwhile the colony’s leaders, defensive about their own failure to protect the frontier, pondered how God’s people could be suffering at the hands of savages. Struck by the similarities between what the refugees had witnessed and what the witchcraft “victims” described, many were quick to see a vast conspiracy of the Devil (in league with the French and the Indians) threatening New England on all sides. By providing this essential context to the famous events, and by casting her net well beyond the borders of Salem itself, Norton sheds new light on one of the most perplexing and fascinating periods in our history.” – Description from GoodReads.

Review of In the Devil’s Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis 0f 1692 by Mary Beth Norton

The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege

“Based on twenty-seven years of original archival research, including the discovery of previously unknown documents, this day-by-day narrative of the hysteria that swept through Salem Village in 1692 and 1693 reveals new connections behind the events, and shows how rapidly a community can descend into bloodthirsty madness. Roach opens her work with chapters on the history of the Puritan colonies of New England, and explains how these people regarded the metaphysical and the supernatural. The account of the days from January 1692 to March 1693 keeps in order the large cast of characters, places events in their correct contexts, and occasionally contradicts earlier assumptions about the gruesome events. The last chapter discusses the remarkable impact of the events, pointing out how the 300th anniversary of the trials made headlines in Japan and Australia.” – Description from GoodReads.

Review of The Salem Witch Trials: A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege by Marilynn E. Roach

An excellently researched account of the events that happened during the Salem Witch Trials. Fascinating information presented in a day-by-day format. I loved being able to follow the events so fluidly. Definitely a book I’d recommend to those who are interested in these events in detail.

Read in 2012.

Deck Z: The Titanic

“Imagine being trapped aboard the doomed Titanic on an icy Atlantic. . . with the walking dead. This fast-paced thriller reimagines the historical events of the fateful Titanic voyage through the lens of zombie mayhem. Captain Edward Smith and his inner circle desperately try to contain a weaponized zombie virus smuggled on board with the 2,200 passengers sailing to New York. Faced with an exploding population of lumbering, flesh-hungry undead, Smith’s team is forced into bloody hand-to-hand combat down the narrow halls of the huge steamer. In its few short days at sea, the majestic Titanic turns into a Victorian bloodbath, steaming at top speed toward a cold, blue iceberg. A creepy, tense page-turner, Deck Z will thrill zombie fans and Titanic buffs alike.” – Description from GoodReads.

Review for Deck Z: The Titanic by Chris Pauls and Scott Solomon.

This book was hard to get in to at first for me. It was slow to start but about 80 pages in it started to pick up. Once the action started it didn’t stop. Well written dialogue and descriptions. Captain Smith was one helluva guy and the authors made you feel for their situation. Lou and Weiss’ connection to each other was well portrayed and quite sweet. Well written after you get past the beginning explanations and background. 4 stars from me and I recommend this to anyone who loves zombie stories or twists on history.
